Frequently Asked Questions

Fire Ratings

What do the fire rating numbers mean (150, 250, 350, 450)?

Fire ratings indicate how long an access panel can withstand fire exposure in minutes. A 150 FR panel is rated for 1.5 hours, 250 FR for 2.5 hours, 350 FR for 3.5 hours, and 450 FR for 4.5 hours. The rating you need depends on the fire-resistance rating of the wall or ceiling assembly where the panel will be installed.

How do I know which fire rating is required for my project?

Fire rating requirements are determined by your local building code and the fire-resistance rating of the surrounding wall or ceiling assembly. Always consult your architect, contractor, or local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) to confirm the required rating before ordering.

Are fire-rated access panels UL listed?

Yes. Our fire-rated panels from Elmdor and Karp are UL listed and meet applicable ASTM standards. UL listing information is available on the individual product pages.

Choosing the Right Size

How do I measure for an access panel?

Measure the rough opening in your wall or ceiling — the actual hole size. Access panels are typically specified by their rough opening dimensions (e.g., 12" x 12"), not the overall frame size. If you're unsure, contact us and we can help you select the correct size.

What sizes are available?

We carry a wide range of standard sizes from small 6" x 6" panels up to large 48" x 48" panels and beyond. Custom sizes are also available on select models — contact us for a quote.

Can I order a custom size?

Yes, custom sizes are available on many of our Elmdor and Karp panel lines. Lead times for custom sizes are longer than standard stock items. Request a quote for custom sizing options and pricing.

Materials

What material options are available?

We offer access panels in several substrate types to match your installation surface:

  • Drywall (Gypsum Board): Panels with a drywall-inlay door that blends seamlessly into standard drywall ceilings and walls.
  • Metal Lath: Designed for plaster-over-metal-lath applications, providing a solid substrate for plastering.
  • Acoustical (Lay-In Tile): Panels that accept a standard acoustical ceiling tile insert for use in drop-ceiling grids.
  • Plaster: Panels designed for traditional plaster wall and ceiling systems.

What frame materials are used?

Frames are typically constructed from galvanized steel or aluminum depending on the product line. Stainless steel options are available for moisture-prone or corrosive environments. Check individual product specifications for details.

Lead Times & Turnaround

How long does it take to receive my order?

Standard stock items typically ship within 1–3 business days. Custom sizes and special-order items generally have lead times of 2–4 weeks depending on the manufacturer and product line. Lead times are confirmed at the time of order.

Do you offer expedited production or shipping?

Rush production may be available on select items for an additional charge. Contact us before placing your order to discuss expedited options for your project timeline.

Shipping

How are access panels shipped?

Access panels are heavy and bulky items. Smaller orders typically ship via UPS or FedEx ground. Larger orders or bulk quantities ship via LTL (Less-Than-Truckload) freight. Freight shipments are delivered to a loading dock or curbside — inside delivery and lift gate service are available for an additional fee.

Do you ship nationwide?

Yes, we ship to all 48 contiguous states. Contact us for shipping quotes to Alaska, Hawaii, or Canada.

How is shipping cost calculated?

Shipping costs are based on the size, weight, and destination of your order. For large or freight orders, shipping is quoted separately. Request a quote to get an accurate shipping estimate for your project.

Returns & Exchanges

What is your return policy?

Standard stock items in new, uninstalled condition may be returned within 30 days of delivery for a refund, less a restocking fee. Custom-sized or special-order panels are non-returnable. Please contact us before returning any item to receive a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number.

What if my order arrives damaged?

Inspect all shipments upon delivery and note any damage on the carrier's delivery receipt before signing. Contact us within 5 business days of delivery with photos of the damage and we will arrange a replacement or credit.

Bulk & Contractor Pricing

Do you offer discounts for large orders or contractors?

Yes. We offer volume pricing for contractors, builders, and large-quantity orders. The more you order, the better the price. Request a quote with your project quantities and we'll provide competitive contractor pricing.

Can I set up a contractor account?

Yes. If you regularly purchase access panels for multiple projects, contact us to discuss setting up a contractor account with preferred pricing and streamlined ordering.
